About the ProgramWorking with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate provides a tangible opportunity to live out your faith. We have a variety of meaningful ways your faith group can get involved, and together, we can make affordable home ownership a reality for families living in need.
Everyone can use the hammer as an instrument to manifest one’s faith. Habitat founder, Millard Fuller, calls this concept "the theology of the hammer," explaining, "we may disagree on all sorts of other things... but we can agree on the idea of building homes with God's people in need, and… doing so… [at] no profit and no interest." Habitat for Humanity is a partnership founded on common ground; bridging theological differences by putting faith into action.
History of the Program
Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational housing organization that was founded in the United States in 1976, based on Christian principles and the idea of partnership housing. Today, volunteers from all walks of life work together to build safe, decent and affordable houses for families living in need.
Where We Have Built
Nationwide, faith groups have donated time and resources to help build several of the almost 2,000 Habitat homes that exist in Canada today. How You Can Help
Habitat for Humanity encourages diversity and cooperation among people of different religions and backgrounds. Members of churches, mosques, temples and synagogues work together on construction sites, and our homeowners are selected based on need, without regard to race or religion.
There are several ways to get involved in the Building on Faith Program:
Adopt-a-Home
Faith groups can fund and build a Habitat home.
Ground Breaking or Build Day Sponsorship
Faith groups can sponsor the kick-off of a Habitat for Humanity build or an individual build day.
