World Habitat Day Edition

Did you know that 12.7 percent of Canadian households are in core housing need? That Canada is the only G8 nation that lacks a national housing strategy? Or that 17% of Canada's energy is consumed heating, cooling and powering our 13 million homes?

It's true, and it's these types of stats we're all encouraged to reflect on each year on the UN-designated World Habitat Day.

This year, World Habitat Day fell on October 3rd. You might have noticed our Globe and Mail insert that day, or heard that Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 500,000th safe, decent and affordable home worldwide.

This Inside Habitat is devoted to Habitat for Humanity's month-long worldwide observance of World Habitat Day. We look back at the founding of our organization in light of the dedication of our 500,000th home, recognize a key figure in the founding of one of our Canadian affiliates, and look ahead to what we're planning for the conclusion of this month-long event.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. Because of our volunteers, advocates, and donors, hundreds of Canadian families in need of affordable housing right now will have realized homeownership by the time we celebrate World Habitat Day next year.

Warmest regards,

Habitat for Humanity Canada

Our Beginnings: From Peanuts to Partners
The early days of Habitat for Humanity and how the idea grew out of a peanut farm to go on to provide 500,000 families with safe, decent and affordable shelter

Habitat for Humanity can be traced back to a plot of land in central Georgia and two visionaries who developed the basic idea for the "Fund for Humanity”, which continues to be the basis for Habitat for Humanity to this day.

Read this account of how Habitat for Humanity came to be, as told by the youngest son of one of its founders, who witnessed a peanut farm evolve into a global movement for affordable housing.

Remembered on World Habitat Day: Todd Hardy, Founder of Habitat for Humanity Yukon
'He'd be thrilled today just to see us here'

As the former territorial NDP leader and Habitat for Humanity Yukon's founder, Todd Hardy devoted much of his life to making affordable housing available to low-income families.

On this past World Habitat Day, a bench plaque was unveiled in Todd's honour. The bench overlooks a Habitat multifamily housing development he had helped plan and oversee in Whitehorse before his death in July, 2010, from the leukemia he had been battling for four years.

Dedicated on World Habitat Day: Our 500,000th Habitat home
It took 24 years for Habitat for Humanity to build 100,000 homes globally - in the past 11, as an organization we've served an additional 400,000 families

On October 3rd, as part of Habitat for Humanity's World Habitat Day events, the 500,000th Habitat home was dedicated in Maai Mahiu, Kenya. On the same day, the walls were raised on the 500,001st house in Paterson, New Jersey, in recognition of the work still needed to be done to eradicate the global affordable housing crisis.

This year's Carter Work Project to kick-off a two-year rebuilding project in Léogâne, Haiti

The culmination of Habitat for Humanity's observance of World Habitat Day is Habitat's most recognized annual event, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, being held this year from November 5th to 12th in Léogâne, Haiti.
