Pakistan Flood Disaster: Habitat for Humanity's Response

In late July 2010, floods, triggered by heavier-than-normal monsoon rains, began in northwest Pakistan. The devastation has occurred across the country and displaced over 20 million people.

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) had previously worked in Pakistan since 2003. Most recently in 2009, Habitat for Humanity Canada completed a two-year, $900,000 project with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) and HFH Pakistan to train more than 200 families in designing and building earthquake-resilient homes. For the full story of Habitat's work in Pakistan, please click here.

Unfortunately, Habitat for Humanity no longer has an active presence in Pakistan following the completion of the CIDA funded project in 2009. Also, Habitat for Humanity's current large-scale involvement in Haiti disaster relief and reconstruction following the January 2010 earthquake, and its commitment to assist 50,000 families there, means that Habitat currently lacks the capacity to take on additional large-scale disaster relief efforts at this time Habitat for Humanity will, however, continue to monitor the situation in Pakistan, and the activities of our Canadian partner organizations currently active in Pakistan, to report on any future plans for relief and reconstruction activities there.
