The Home Depot's Employees Are Volunteering Across Canada

Habitat's Largest Supporter Continues it's Support Helping Build More Homes

The Home Depot's commitment in helping break the cycle of poverty by providing hard-working Canadian families with a solid foundation has seen their employees involved and volunteering in Habitat builds, house dedications and groundbreakings across the country.

This first-hand view of the Habitat solution has given The Home Depot employees an appreciation of all the work the partner family must make in donating 500 hours of "sweat equity" into the building of their own home.

In Montreal, The Home Depot was there to present the keys to two Habitat families, as part of a three-year partnership with Habitat for Humanity Montreal. As well, just West of Montreal, they were on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new home in the Deux-Montagne region.

"It was a rewarding experience to present two Habitat partner families with the keys to their new homes. To be a part of this, helping build the homes and share in the joy of the families when they receive their keys was wonderful. Our associates are looking forward to volunteering on the next build in Deux-Montagne." ~ Jack Paul, L’Acadie Store Manager, The Home Depot

In Ontario, Team Depot was busy building 16 Energy Star certified homes in Toronto and a Storage Barn for the ReStore in Collingwood. 53 employees volunteered over 400 hours on these two one-day projects.

“This was my first Habitat build and it was a very enriching experience. It was an impressive, exciting and educational experience working with Habitat for Humanity and learning from other volunteers who all shared a passion for creating new homes for people who we knew deserved them.” ~ Arwah Hamza, Online Producer – eCommerce for homedepot.ca

In Western Canada, 70 employees from 17 The Home Depot stores volunteered over 500 hours on three Habitat for Humanity projects. With the support of The Home Depot Canada, each of these homes is being constructed in accordance with environmentally sustainable building practices, decreasing the impact on the environment and saving Habitat partner families hundreds of dollars in home energy costs each year.

One of these projects took place in Regina, where 10 employees from The Home Depot Regina North store helped put in the floor sheathing on the current build. Another in Calgary had over 30 employees spend three days helping finish the interior of a home, lending their expertise installing drywall, trim, painting and more.

“It was a great opportunity to work alongside associates from other area stores, all working together to help build this home for a deserving family. We all truly enjoyed the experience.” ~ Danielle Schule, Store Manager (Calgary Country Hills Home Depot)

Employees from all 9 Edmonton area stores worked on everything from roof framing,
to siding and drywall, and even building recycling bins for the job site.
