After first being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer, Sabrina and her family struggled financially and emotionally. They had to leave their comfortable rented house and move into a tiny, old apartment that was difficult (and costly) to heat.
As Sabrina focused on completing her degree in massage therapy, Madison's dad died unexpectedly. Sabrina faced the added challenge of providing a good home for her daughter as a single mother.
Madison, who was diagnosed with ADHD, had no place to play and burn off her energy, and it affected her school work. Sabrina balanced her home life and studies, but the chemo had taken such a toll on her body. Exhausted and stressed, Sabrina says, “I felt I was failing my daughter.”
A friend suggested Sabrina contact her local Habitat for Humanity. After applying, she was approved to become a Habitat homeowner. A Habitat mortgage helps Sabrina afford the monthly payments for her home, since they are geared to her income. With increased financial stability and security, Sabrina and Madison can achieve better opportunities. Madison is much happier and healthier.
“Habitat has given us a clean start,” she says. “We are very grateful to everyone who helped Habitat help us.”
Habitat for Humanity Canada builds strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.
Habitat does not give away free homes – families pay an interest-free mortgage geared to their income and volunteer 500 hours with Habitat. As a Habitat homeowner pays off their mortgage, the funds are invested in a revolving fund, which is used by local Habitats to build more homes for low-income families in their community.
Habitat homeowners are responsible for maintaining their own home, and Habitat helps by providing homeowner education classes, ranging from financial literacy and budgeting to home repair and maintenance.
Your gift can not only help families across Canada, but also around the world.
