It's National Housing Day
November 22, 2017
Today is National Housing Day, a day to mark how important having access to decent and affordable housing is. According to newly released data, one in seven Canadian households are in core housing need. Too many Canadians are experiencing a housing crisis, living in overcrowded conditions, paying more than 30% of their income on housing that may also require major repairs.
This afternoon, Prime Minister Trudeau will be making an announcement on housing in Toronto, which our President and CEO, Mark Rodgers (pictured below), has been invited to attend by the Government of Canada. We are hopeful that we will see an announcement on the national housing strategy, which the federal government has committed to releasing by the end of this year, that emphasizes and invests in Habitat's model of affordable homeownership as a proven solution to improving housing conditions for families and Indigenous communities. The release of a national housing strategy would represent a significant step forward for the federal government in beginning to address the affordable housing crisis in Canada.
In Habitat Canada’s consultations with the federal government for the national housing strategy, we were clear that affordable homeownership is an important housing option for Canadians and an important part of Canada’s national housing strategy. Our model of affordable homeownership has long-term benefits for the community:
We encourage the government to continue its important work collaborating with Indigenous communities to create and implement an Indigenous Housing Strategy that addresses the dire housing issues faced by Indigenous families in Canada.
