Habitat mobilizes relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma
September 12, 2017
Our hearts go out to the many victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, which have caused unprecedented flooding and damaged thousands of homes and communities in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean.
Although Habitat Canada does not operate a disaster response program, we are a member of the leading global nonprofit Habitat for Humanity International, based in Georgia. Habitat International is actively involved in disaster response in more than 50 countries around the world, and has already been hard at work responding to both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
With the help of local Habitats located throughout the regions affected by the storms, Habitat International is currently assessing shelter and housing needs. Trained Disaster Corps volunteers have been deployed to conduct rapid assessments of storm damage and to help clean out homes damaged by winds and flood waters. Habitat International’s long-term post-disaster recovery efforts will include repairing damaged homes and constructing new affordable homes.
Habitat International was a beneficiary of the star-studded "Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief" telethon, which aired live on Tuesday, September 12. The telethon featured some of America's biggest stars, including George Clooney, Jamie Foxx, Karlie Kloss, Beyonce, and more coming together to raise funds for those affected by the hurricanes.
