Haiti: Two Years Into the Recovery | Habitat for Humanity Canada

January 12, 2012

Dear Habitat for Humanity supporter,

Two years ago today, Haiti was struck by a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake that destroyed the homes of over two million people. Having recently visited some of the worst-affected areas, I witnessed entire neighbourhoods still lying in ruin, and the latest statistics have more than half a million men, women and children still living in dilapidated and unsafe shelter. This reality is a constant reminder that reconstruction work in Haiti is far from over, and at Habitat for Humanity Canada, we continue to be committed to rebuilding the crippled nation.

Progress and Hope
With the second anniversary of this devastating event upon us, there is clear cause for hope and healing on the road to recovery Ė Habitat has helped over 40,000 Haitian families move closer, not only to recovery, but to transformational changes that will help us achieve lasting outcomes in the region.

Thanks to the outpouring of support following the quake from compassionate Canadians like you , and support received from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), we currently have a community-driven project underway in Haiti, Enabling Neighbourhood Revival, that will see:

  • 175 homes repaired and 100 sanitation facilities installed for 400 families
  • Local companies and residents trained in repair, maintenance and reconstruction
  • 250 local residents trained in financial literacy
  • Increased female representation in community development and reconstruction
  • 10,000 community members educated on major health issues; 100 pregnant women and 900 children immunized; and health supplies provided to 3,000 households and two schools (in partnership with a local Canadian health NGO, Rayjon ShareCare).

Help is Still Needed - Habitat's Work, 2012 and Beyond
With our progress to date, CIDA has now agreed to support a second Habitat for Humanity Canada project in Haiti (pending contract finalization)
. This project, Investing in People and Business in Haiti, is poised to fill gaps that have been identified within Haitiís construction industry, increasing the nationís capacity and stimulating economic growth. This will lead to Haitians having the skills they need to rebuild their nation in ruin and provide safe places to live to the so many still in dire need.

Thank you for your support in helping us get this far. We will keep you up to date as we continue to provide Haitian men, women and children with the safety and security they need to improve their lives. If you would like to learn about further supporting our work in Haiti, please contact Erin OíNeill, Manager, National Partnerships & Giving Programs, at eoneill@habitat.ca or (800) 667-5137 x353.
